The employment and learning overarching project for the Communities First neighbourhood plan as identified as a priority need for the community of Sandfields and Aberavon, Port Talbot, South Wales. It is a New Sandfields Aberavon 'NSA' project. STRIDES has been developed from the Unit 19 Training carpentry workshop that was initially formed in 2002. By using carpentry as a working tool U19 was able to attract people into the workshop by simulating a real work place environment. By utilising this real work theory, U19 was able to develop partnerships with a host of partners to attract a broad range of beneficiaries. These beneficiaries were called project workers, this being a more meaningful name rather that client / student etc. STRIDES has followed on the principle of U19 and has 9 workshops and areas of support using this method. Coursework is tailored around individual needs and each person has an essential skills test that defines the level of support that they may need. STRIDES is the first step along a road of progression for people who are economically inactive with Neath and Port Talbot that uses the workshops as engagement and working tools. |
